Scraps of Designing: Candy Wrappers Flavor L with a Gift
Last week, the very talented Sherwood Studio released a kit, Geometric Boy, that along with a thread at DST about Geocaching, inspired me to scrap our two lone Geocaching adventures. If you aren’t familiar with Geocaching, it is “a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices”. If you aren’t familiar with this game, you can find out more about it here (which is where I borrowed the aforementioned description from).
I know three different friend families in three different states that are really into Geocaching. They have many, many finds logged and through the magic of Facebook I get to about read their adventures regularly and so have been intrigued by the concept. However, I actually have a love/hate relationship with the outdoors. I love to look at it (preferably with my camera in hand) but don’t like to be hot and sweaty and being out in the sun too long often makes me sick. For those reasons (along with the fact I am pretty out of shape), I don’t usually do things, like hiking, that make me all hot and sweaty. So it took me a little while to convince myself to try it.
A few months ago though, I had another friend on Facebook that I went to high school with that posted she was thinking about going so I messaged her to see if we could tag along and thus we were off on our first treasure-hunt. I will say, I didn’t hate it, despite the getting hot and sweaty part. More importantly though, my son, which was the real reason I thought it might be something interesting for my family to try, loved it. So much so that I was willing to pay the $10 to purchase the full version of the Geocaching app for my smartphone. I had plans to make it a regular family event this summer. Then, summer came and my son spent the first half of the summer at sleep-away camp and was only home for a day or two a week (at which point his laundry had to be done to get ready for the next week. The week he was finally home, I went to camp for a week with the girls from our youth group. It took me a week to recover from that and then the following week I sprained my ankle. My well-intended plans to explore Geocaching more this summer got lost somewhere in the midst of other summer happenings. We did go on a family outing to a local state park on Wednesday, the last day of summer vacation, but I didn’t have any cell service there so we couldn’t access the Geocaching application. If I had remembered the last time I was there I didn’t have cell service and if my husband had actually told me where we were going beforehand, I could have downloaded the coordinates first. My son was disappointed and sat staring at the park map wondering what trail we could try to go on to look for the them without any coordinates to go by. (Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen, especially since I am still having problems with my ankle. I distracted him with the playground.)

I’m impressed, I have to say. Really hardly ever do I encounter a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me let you know, you have hit the nail on the head. Your concept is outstanding; the problem is one thing that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very blissful that I stumbled across this in my search for something referring to this.
